The process of slate floor cleaning and floor sealing is meticulous. Slate (like other wall and floor tiling material such as marble and limestone) is often used in hotels, offices and residential buildings as it gives the floors a high-end and stylish look. There does come a certain point where slate tiles become visibly rough or worn out, and intensive cleaning can be done to rejuvenate them. This is where our commercial floor cleaning services come into play.
The cleaning process here includes not just removing any dirt from the surface, but also polishing and reapplying of a coat or sealer. We were recently assigned a cleaning job that involved slate floor tiles. Below is a picture that shows the state of the floor before we started working on it.
Once we were able to get the floor cleaned properly, next came the floor sealing stage. The purpose of sealing is helping to reduce the speed in which the surface absorbs liquid over time. It also guards the tiles against staining, which in turn makes it easier for day-to-day maintenance of the entire surface. Floor sealing can be done using (1) a ‘natural look’ sealer that penetrates the porous stone and provides a natural appearance for the surface or (2) a topical sealer that yields a ‘wet look’ finish.
In this case, we employed a ‘natural look’ sealer. It was important to maintain the original look of the floor while at the same time, to provide it with long-lasting stain protection. This sealer would fill the gaps in the pores of the slate tiles. The molecules within the sealer would also bond with the stone minerals to create a barrier against liquids.
As shown in the image below, you’d notice the new slate floor tiles after we finished the whole floor sealing process. The surface certainly appears much cleaner and fresher than the original.
The main advantage of using a ‘natural look’ sealer is it doesn’t alter the original floor tile colour or surface finish in any way. Additionally, it offers a great deal of protection from staining for a long period of time.
